Background:
Evolve Student Housing is a transformative, multi-phase construction project that will provide on-campus housing for students at San Diego State University. California plumbing code §1012 states that laundry equipment that does not have integral strainers shall discharge into an interceptor with a removable screen that prevents solids 1/2 inch or larger from passing into the drainage system.
The Solution:
Using Striem’s online Product Selection Tool, the project engineer quickly identified the appropriate Tuff Trough models based on the number of laundry machines served by each unit. Its rotationally molded construction eliminates corners and crevices where lint and debris can accumulate, improving performance while simplifying maintenance.
Each unit features a factory-engineered sloped interior floor, removing the need for contractors to pitch the trough during installation and reducing labor time in the field. The included ½-inch perforated lint screens provide code-compliant solids interception and are easily accessible for maintenance. Less is more! Being able to provide an engineered product for this project saved the engineer significant time during the design process. It’s tempting to want a custom trough, but in reality, when you have three models/sizes, it makes the design process much easier. Rather than designing a custom trough on top of all the additional standard design work required for the project, the specifying engineer can simply select one of three options based on the number of machines. This project required multiple troughs of each size, and the resulting time savings were significant.
