  • Project: Carlsbad High School Science Building Modernization – Carlsbad, CA
  • Application: Science Lab
  • Products:
    LB-125: Acid neutralization tank
    Inspector-4: Sample port
  • Lead Time: 3 business days
  • Rep | Regional: Renco Sales | Andrew Heck

Background:

  • A neutralization tank and sample well were needed for a new science classroom. It’s best practice for an engineer to size the neutralization tank by the number of lab sinks (there is a reference table in the ASPE Design Handbook).
  • Renco Sales pointed the engineer to our Lab Basin™ Series on the website. Each product page has a “Number of Lab Sinks” associated with it. The engineer simply perused the tank lineup and selected the LB-125 based on 24 lab sinks in the lab.
  • Sizing Tool update: Since this project’s completion, visitors can also find the correct product(s) using Striem’s new online ACID NEUTRALIZATION TANK SIZING TOOL.

Key Takeaways:

  • Here’s where it got interesting… At the eleventh hour, the jurisdiction required double-wall containment for this install. This comes up a handful of times each year. Striem and Renco’s recommendation was to install the tank inside a concrete vault that could be formed on site.* The space between the tank and vault would serve as the containment space should a leak occur.*IMPORTANT: For structural reasons, many Striem tanks are required to be directly buried. However, model LB-125 and the Inspector-4 can operate in a vaulted scenario.
  • The engineer then thought “inside the box.” The install footprint for the tank was not very large given existing site conditions. However, the space constraints fit the profile of a pre-cast concrete tank quite well. So, they decided to put our tanks within a tank. The contractor then used the LR-24 manway extensions to extend the accessways to grade. Load bearing at grade was not a concern given the cast iron rings used at grade.
